What Is Counselling?
The skilled, professional use of relationship between the counsellor and the client can facilitate self-knowledge, acceptance, and growth.
The goal of counselling is to provide an opportunity to work towards living a more resourceful and successful life. The counselling relationship may vary according to the individual’s needs, but is usually focused on addressing and resolving specific problems, decision making, coping with crisis, and realizing one’s internal insight, knowledge, and resources. Through the counselling relationship, the counsellor can facilitate individual’s resolution of inner conflicts, and awareness of other perspectives about themselves or other relationships.
(Definition of Counselling according to The British Association of Counselling, 1986)
However, there are 3 limits to confidentiality in therapy:
1) If the counsellors suspects or believes that you are in immanent risk or danger, or that a third party maybe in imminent risk or danger, the therapist must break confidentiality
2) If the counsellors suspects potential child abuse, the matter will need to be reported to the ministry of child and family services (MCFD)
3) In compliance with a legal order such as subpoena, or if disclosure is otherwise required by the judge in court of law
